Assia & Shura

('Lullaby - for Shura' - Richard Murphy)

Before you'd given death a name
Like bear or crocodile, death came
To take your mother out one night.
But when she'd said her last good night
You cried, "I don't want you to go",
So in her arms she took you too.

that is the saddest way i can think of to describe what happened. and when you pair it up with the picture, it's like i can actually hear it as a lullaby. poor assia, poor shura.

yeah... I find that poem heartbreaking, it's so simple and short but says so much - the photo is heartbreaking too.. the 2 together are so so sad,

God that picture breaks my heart. I know virtually nothing about Assia, and despite the part of me that says, "Grr, you stole Ted away from my beloved Sylvia!", there is another part that says, "You were so beautiful and had so much life left to live. WHY?" I mean, duh, I get why, but still...WHY???

Yes. I find the more I find out about her the more I feel for her. Ithink Ted would have gone off with someone else anyway, Assia or not. Well of course he did anyway - he went on having affairs while he was with Assia. He had 2 other women on the go in particular - he's meant to have maybe had another child with one of them. One of the relationships was more serious and Assia found out about it, not long before she died(sound familiar?!). In fact she had been trying to contact him and couldn't and later found out he had been abroad with this woman - exactly what happened to SP before she died, trying to get in touch with him but couldn't then found out he had been abroad with Assia. By the time Assia died she had been basically 'banished' by TH back to London, with Shura, because her presence in the house was interfering with his freedom. She was seriously depressed and just got more and more so. I hate it when some people go on about her just trying to copy SP in her death and go one further by taking Shura with her.. people like that don't know what it's like to be just about to take your own life. And I don't think for a minute she did it for those reasons.

*ramble alert!*

Did you see the post I posted for you with the links to the online newspaper extracts that have been published here over the last couple of weeks from the forthcoming Assia bio? They're fascinating. (only 7 days to go until the book is out -wooooooooooooooooooooohooooo!!!!).

(let me know if you can't find the post with the links or you didnt see it, I'll send you the link again - I think you'll really enjoy reading them.. although be prepared for a major youbastardTed phase! I thought I was over that phase by now but my god... some of this stuff)

Shura was precious. Does anyone else see her striking resemblance to Ted?

That picture alone put me on the edge of a thick melancholy, let alone that beautiful, simple piece. Where did you find it?

Yeah... it's heartbreaking. Yeah I can see a TH resemblance and a strong AW one.
Someone on the sylvia plath forum (not the silly journal community!) mentioned the lullaby a while ago and then someone else found it and posted it. It was quite hard to find.. part of the good thing about the forum, you can ask serious questions and the people reading it really know how to find out.
